Presented by Maine Thrive Insights

Across the Penobscot Valley, more people are looking for ways to stay active, recover from injuries, and continue doing the things they love.
In this first Penobscot Valley Insights conversation, we sat down with Brad Libby of Performance Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation to talk about recovery, mobility, sports injuries, and helping Mainers move better every day.
Interview Highlights
Helping Mainers Stay Active, Recover Stronger & Move Without Pain
For more than 13 years, Brad Libby has worked with people across the Penobscot Valley who are trying to recover from injuries, reduce pain, and get back to doing the things they love — whether that’s running, working, gardening, hiking, or simply keeping up with everyday life.
During our conversation, Brad shared practical advice about recovery, mobility, injury prevention, and the importance of personalized care.
Why Physical Therapy Matters
One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation was that physical therapy is not just for athletes or post-surgery recovery.
Brad explained that many people wait too long before seeking help for pain or mobility issues. Often, small discomforts gradually become larger problems that begin affecting everyday life.
“A lot of people think pain is just something they have to live with, especially as they get older. But many times, there are ways we can help improve movement and reduce that pain.”
Common Injuries Seen in Maine
Living in Maine comes with an active lifestyle — and sometimes that leads to injuries. Brad discussed seeing patients dealing with:
# Back and neck pain
# Sports injuries
# Shoulder and knee problems
# Overuse injuries
# Falls and balance concerns
# Work-related strain and repetitive motion injuries
He also noted that seasonal activities play a role in the types of injuries people experience throughout the year.
Physical Therapy vs. Chiropractic Care
One interesting part of the discussion focused on the difference between physical therapy and chiropractic treatment.
Brad explained that physical therapy often focuses on:
*movement patterns,
*strength building,
*flexibility,
*recovery exercises,
*and long-term functional improvement.
The goal is not simply temporary relief, but helping people improve how their body moves and functions over time.
Advice for Staying Active
Brad emphasized that staying active is one of the best things people can do for long-term health and mobility.
His advice was simple:
1- Keep moving
2- Address pain early
3- Don’t ignore mobility issues
4-Build strength gradually
5-Stay consistent with recovery and exercise
Even small daily habits can make a major difference over time.
Helping the Community Thrive
At the heart of the conversation was something bigger than injuries and recovery — helping people continue living active, healthy lives in the communities they love.
Whether someone is recovering from surgery, training for a race, returning to work, or simply trying to move comfortably again, Brad and his team are focused on helping people regain confidence in their movement and daily life.
That commitment to community wellness is exactly why we wanted to feature this conversation as part of our very first Penobscot Valley Insights story.
